School of Life Sciences (SLS) of Inner Mongolia University was established in December, 1995, formerly the Department of Biological Sciences, which was founded in 1957. College of Life Sciences consists of 3 education institutions, including Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Ecology and Department of Agronomy; 4 research centers, including Experimental Animal Research Center, Biotechnology Center, Natural Resources Institute and Institute of Animal Genetic Resources on Mongolian Plateau; and 1 Basic Experimental Teaching Center for Undergraduates.
SLS enjoys a strong faculty team with a group of renowned scholars and academic leaders. Among its 127 faculty and staff members, there are 102 members of teaching and research, 17 teaching assistants and 8 staff members. Members of teaching and research with senior professional titles accounts for 69% of the total, among which there are 34 professors (researchers included), and 36 associate professors (associate researchers included); 77 with doctoral degree accounting for 76%; and 23 doctoral supervisors and 54 master supervisors. CLS also has 8 experts who enjoys the government special allowance of the State Council; 1 Distinguished Visiting Professor, Ministry of Education “Yangtze Scholars Award Program”; 2 teachers who enter “ The National New Century Talents Project”; 3 teachers who participate in “New Century Talent Support Program” of the Ministry of Education;3 members of the College Teaching Guidance Committee of the Ministry of Education; 1 Science and Technology Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education (Mammalian reproductive biology and biotechnology team); 3 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education; 2 National Outstanding Teachers;1 National Teacher’s Ethics Pacesetter;1 National Women Ethics Pacesetter and 7 Baogang Excellent Teacher’s Prize. There are 4 young and middle-aged experts who have made outstanding contributions to the Autonomous Region; 2 research staff, to the front line of production; 4, winners of Inner Mongolia Outstanding Talent Prize;2 chief scientists of the “333 Talent Recruitment Program” and 2 teams and 23 staff have entered the "Grassland Elite" Project of Inner Mongolia.
SLS has strong discipline strength and scientific research platform, consisting of 1 national key discipline, 1 national key cultivating discipline, 1 key disciplines in autonomous regions level, and a “211 Project” key constructive disciplines of Inner Mongolia University, respectively in grassland ecology and biotechnology of agricultural and animal husbandry. There are 2 Breeding Base of State Key Laboratories jointly supported by both the Ministry of Education and the Province, namely biology of reproduction in mammals and biotechnology laboratory and Inner Mongolia grassland ecology laboratory, while the former is regarded as the key laboratory by Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Inner Mongolia, the latter, the key laboratory of the Autonomous Region; 1 Key Laboratory jointly supported by both the Ministry of Education and the Province -- Laboratory of biotechnology for forage and specialty crops, which is the the key laboratory of the Autonomous Region. There are 1 research center of technology and engineering for large scale livestock breeding of the Ministry of Education-- Engebei Cashmere Goat Breeding Engineering Center; 2 Engineering Technology Research Centers of the Autonomous Region -- the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Engineering Research Center of Standardized Production of Chinese and Mongolian Medicinal Materials and Cell and Molecular Engineering Technology Research Center of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
SLS has established a complete personnel training system. It features 2 primary discipline doctoral programs and 3 post-doctoral research programs on biology and ecology; 3 primary discipline master programs on biology, ecology, grassology and 1 professional master degree on biological engineering. At present there are biological sciences, biotechnology, biological engineering, ecology, food science and engineering, food quality and safety, horticulture and other 7 majors, among which biological science and ecology is the state-level characteristic disciplines, and specialty of biological technology is the innovation training mode of biotechnology talents in frontier minority areas. SLS features 2 national talent training bases on basic science research of national science of biology and teaching talent training and national training base for life science and technology talents, 1 national life science undergraduate experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national teaching team (Ecology) and 2 autonomous district level teaching team (teaching team for field practice in ecology and Biology); 1 National Top-quality Course -- Ecology, 1 National Bilingual Teaching Demonstration Course -- molecular biology courses, and other 7 Top-quality Courses at the autonomous region’s level, such as general ecology, biochemistry, animal biology and experiment, genetics, biology field comprehensive practice, reproductive biology and gene engineering etc.
The school now has 1,586 students, of whom 110 are doctoral candidates, 381 are postgraduates, 1,095 are undergraduates, and 28 are educated overseas students. Since the founding of the Department of biology in 1957, it has cultivated a number of outstanding talents, totally 7,000 in a variety of majors. Some of them have become industry leaders or backbone.
Since its foundation, SLS, focusing on research in the field of grassland ecology and agricultural biotechnology, aiming to solve the key problems in grassland resource of northern China, ecological environment and agricultural and animal husbandry production, has formed its stable research directions on mammalian reproductive biology and biotechnology, grassland ecology and regional sustainable development, grass and special crop biotechnology, Medicinal plant chemistry and resource utilization, and molecular regulation of tumor cells, the Mongolia plateau animal genetic resources protection and utilization. Meanwhile, a batch of high-level original scientific and technological achievements and application demonstration results, integration of key livestock breeding techniques, breeding of new varieties of fine grass and special crops, grassland degradation control and ecological restoration of degraded grassland, have become an important base for the state and Autonomous Region to solve major scientific and technological problems in the field of discipline and cultivate high-level talents.
Since its founding, SLS has made a series of fruitful research results, and has been able to bear the ability of major scientific research projects and enhance the ability to publish high-level academic papers. A total commitment to all kinds reaches more than 700 scientific research projects, including more than 70 national major projects (863, 973, the national science and technology support program and major science and technology projects) received approved funding for a total of 630 million yuan; with nearly 2,000 academic papers published, among which SCI included more than 300 papers, academic monographs and more than 130 textbooks were published. More than 40 patents (inventions and utility models patents) have been obtained, and nearly 40 scientific research achievements have been awarded at the national, provincial and ministerial levels.
